Homeschooling in the Kitchen

I love cooking! I love it more now because I found out that I can homeschool Bryleigh while doing everyday activities! This includes cooking in the kitchen.

There are so many things that children can learn in the kitchen.

Today Bryleigh learned:

1. How to Follow & Read Directions: She learned to read the directions to see how much of each ingredient that we needed.

2. Simple Arithmetic & Measurements: We compared amounts. We also compared measuring cups. Which was bigger, what is a half cup, what is a whole cup?

3. Sensory Awareness: I allowed Bryleigh to taste test all the ingredients that we used for tonight's supper (except the raw beef.)

4. Vocabulary Enrichment: We talked about solids, liquids & gases. We even talked about water's boiling point & evaporation.

5. Concept Development: I allowed Bryleigh to feel the beef before and after we defrosted it to find out the texture. I also asked her to pad out the meat to compare sizes.

6. Cause and Effect Relationships: We talked about what would happen if we put too much water in the pot and it boiled over. We also talked about what would happen if we left the water boiling too long.

7. Cooperation: This was not hard at all. Each one of us had a turn to pad out the meat, stir the peas & stir the rice.

Now our homeschool day is done & so is our supper :)
